The 'BREAKWATER' hosta is a specific, variegated cultivar known for its heart-shaped leaves and color changes from blue-green and yellow in spring to green and white in summer.
Characteristics & Care
Appearance: Leaves are heart-shaped and lightly textured. They emerge blue-green with wide creamy-yellow edges in spring, with the edges randomly streaking toward the center. Later in the season, the center turns green and the margin turns white.
Mature Size: It slowly grows into a mound about 12 inches tall and 30 inches wide.
Flowers: The plant produces fertile, near-white flowers in early summer.
Light Needs: Prefers partial to full shade; too much direct sunlight can scorch the leaves.
Soil & Water: Thrives in rich, well-draining soil that is consistently moist.
Fertilizer: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring. Avoid putting fertilizer directly on the crown, shoots, or leaves to prevent burning.
Pests: It is considered slug-resistant (a general hosta trait, the thick leaves help). Deer and rabbits are also common pests, so critter control methods may be necessary.
Maintenance: Cut back the leaves in the fall after they have died back naturally from frost. This helps discourage overwintering pests.
