Catherine Hosta is a medium-sized perennial plant known for its striking, color-changing variegated foliage. It is a sport (genetic mutation) of the popular 'Halcyon' cultivar and is often compared to the award-winning 'June' hosta.
Key Features
- Foliage: Heart-shaped, thick leaves with a dusky blue-green margin and a central splash that starts chartreuse-yellow and matures to creamy white by summer.
- Flowers: Produces elegant, bell-shaped pale lavender blooms on upright stems (scapes) in mid-to-late summer.
- Size: Typically grows 12–18 inches (30–45 cm) tall and spreads 18–28 inches (45–70 cm) wide.
- Texture: The leaves have a slightly corrugated, waxy texture, which provides better-than-average resistance to slugs and snails.
Care and Conditions
- Light: Thrives in partial to full shade. While it can tolerate some morning sun, direct afternoon sun may burn the variegated centers.
- Soil: Prefers fertile, moist, and well-drained soil.
- Hardiness: Highly durable and suited for USDA Zones 3–9.
- Maintenance: Low-maintenance; simply remove spent flower stalks and clear dead foliage after the first frost in autumn.
