Hosta 'Climax' is a large, striking perennial known for its thick, corrugated dark green leaves with wide, bright gold margins. It is a "sport" of the 'High Noon' variety and is highly valued in shade gardens for its architectural vase-shaped growth habit and lavender summer blooms.
Key Characteristics
- Foliage: Broadly oval, heart-shaped leaves that are heavily puckered (corrugated). The center is deep green, bordered by a 1-inch wide golden-yellow margin.
- Size: A mature plant typically reaches 18–24 inches in height and spreads 3–4 feet wide.
- Flowers: Dainty spikes of lavender tubular flowers appear in mid-summer (late June to July) on scapes reaching up to 32–36 inches tall.
- Growth Rate: It is considered a relatively fast grower compared to other large hostas.
Ideal Growing Conditions
- Hardiness: It thrives in USDA Zones 3–9, making it suitable for a wide range of climates.
- Sun Exposure: It performs best in partial to full shade. While it can tolerate some morning sun, intense afternoon sun may cause leaf scorch.
- Soil: Prefers rich, moist, and well-drained soil. It is not overly particular about soil pH but benefits from added organic matter like compost.
- Watering: Requires even moisture and should not be allowed to dry out completely, especially during the first growing season.
Care and Maintenance
- Pest Resistance: Its thick, "heavy substance" leaves provide better resistance to slugs than thinner-leaved varieties. It is also noted for being somewhat pollution-tolerant and resistant to verticillium wilt.
- Winter Preparation: As a deciduous perennial, it will die back to the ground after the first hard frost. Remove dead foliage in late fall to prevent pests from overwintering.
- Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges.
