El Nino Hosta

The 'El Niño' Hosta is a highly regarded medium-sized perennial known for its intense blue foliage and striking white margins. It is a "sport" (natural mutation) of the famous 'Halcyon' hosta. 

Key Characteristics

• Foliage: Features thick, heart-shaped, powder-blue leaves with crisp, bright white margins. The thick texture makes it notably slug-resistant.
• Flowers: Produces bell-shaped lavender flowers on scapes roughly 20–24 inches tall in midsummer (July–August).
• Size: Typically grows 1–1.5 feet tall and spreads 2.5–3 feet wide, forming a dense, symmetrical mound.
• Growth Rate: It is generally a medium grower. 
  

Growing Requirements

• Light: Prefers partial to full shade. Keeping it out of direct afternoon sun helps maintain the deep blue color.
• Soil: Thrives in moist, well-drained, fertile soil enriched with organic matter.
• Hardiness: Suitable for USDA Zones 3–9.
• Maintenance: Low maintenance; it dies back in winter and should be cleaned up in early spring before new growth begins.
