The Hosta 'Hummingbird's Nest' is a distinctive, small perennial known for its unique cupped foliage and seasonal color transformation. Introduced by hybridizer Randy Goodwin, this variety is an open-pollinated seedling of 'Crazy Quilt' and is highly valued by collectors for its sculptural appearance.
Plant Features and Appearance
- Foliage: The leaves are distinctly cup-shaped and corrugated. In spring, they emerge with blue-green centers and soft cream margins. By summer, the centers deepen to a vibrant green while the margins brighten to a crisp, snow white.
- Size: It forms a compact, upright clump reaching approximately 10 inches tall and 20 inches wide at maturity.
- Flowers: In midsummer, the plant produces slender scapes topped with pale lavender flowers that serve as a nectar source for hummingbirds.
- Growth Rate: This variety has a slower growth rate than many other hostas but is considered well worth the wait for its artistic beauty.
Growing and Care Conditions
- Light: Prefers shade or dappled sunlight. Blue-centered varieties often require more shade to maintain their waxy coating and prevent leaf burn from harsh afternoon sun.
- Soil: Requires moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. It is intolerant of soggy or standing water, which can lead to root rot.
- Water: Needs about one inch of water per week. Avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of foliar diseases and slug attraction.
- Hardiness: Generally hardy in USDA Zones 3-9.
