The 'Humpback Whale' hosta is a sought-after, giant cultivar known for its massive, dome-shaped mound of thick, blue-green foliage that can reach a spread of 7 feet at maturity. It was hybridized by the late Mildred Seaver, often called the "Queen of Hostas".

General Information and Care

  • Size & Appearance: This is a truly massive hosta, maturing to approximately 3 feet tall with a 7-foot spread. The leaves are large, heart-shaped, and corrugated (textured). They are their bluest in the spring and transform to a blue-green hue as the summer progresses.
  • Sunlight: The plant thrives in part shade to full shade. Morning sun is acceptable, but strong afternoon sun should be avoided as it can burn the leaves. Growing it in more shade helps maintain the blue color longer into the season.
  • Soil & Watering: It prefers moist, well-drained soils with a high organic content. Once established, it can tolerate some drought, but consistent moisture is best for optimal performance.
  • Pests: Slugs and snails are a common problem for hostas. Applying slug bait in early spring or cleaning up dead foliage in the fall can help manage this issue.
  • Flowers: Near-white, bell-shaped flowers appear on blue-green scapes (stalks) around July. These flowers can attract hummingbirds and butterflies.
