The 'I'll Fly Away' hosta (Hosta 'I'll Fly Away') is a medium-sized, intensely blue-green hosta known for its unique, gracefully arching leaves that appear ready to "take flight". It was registered in 2021 by Harold McDonell.
Key Characteristics
Foliage: The leaves are intensely blue-green, ovate, slightly corrugated, and wavy. The name comes from unique "wing-like lobes" at the base of the leaves near the petiole, giving the plant its distinctive, airy appearance. The blue color is persistent and holds up well throughout the season.
Size: This hosta forms an elegant, mounded clump, typically reaching a mature size of about 17 inches tall and 31–35 inches wide.
Flowers: It produces fertile, near-white, tubular-shaped flowers on 24-inch scapes that bloom from June into July.
Originator: Developed by Harold McDonell in 2021, it is a seedling involving Hosta 'Neptune'.
Hardiness Zone: It is recommended for USDA Hardiness Zones 3 to 9.
Light Requirements: Like most blue hostas, it is shade-tolerant, and filtered sun is best to maintain its blue coloring, as too much direct sun can make the leaves turn more green.
