The Japanese Painted Fern (Athyrium niponicum var. pictum) is an award-winning, deciduous perennial prized for its distinctive, arching foliage that features a mix of green, silver, and burgundy hues. It is a popular, low-maintenance choice for adding color and texture to shaded garden areas.
Mature size 18" to 24" tall and wide
Care and Growing Conditions
The Japanese Painted Fern is relatively easy to grow when its preferred conditions are met.
- Light: Prefers partial to full shade. The best foliage color, especially the silvery tones, appears in light or dappled shade; too much direct sun can wash out the colors or scorch the fronds.
- Soil: Requires organically rich, consistently moist, but well-drained soil. It thrives in acidic to neutral soil pH (4 to 7). Adding organic amendments like compost or leaf mold annually is beneficial.
- Water: It needs regular watering to maintain evenly moist soil; the fronds will turn brown if allowed to dry out, especially in hot weather.
Temperature & Hardiness: Hardy in USDA zones 3-8, it handles cold well, going dormant in winter. It prefers moderate temperatures (55-80°F) during its active growth period. - Maintenance: Generally low maintenance. Old fronds should be cut back in early spring before new growth begins. The plants are also notably deer and rabbit resistant.
