The 'Magic Island' Hosta is a compact, slug-resistant perennial known for its striking, color-changing variegated foliage and low maintenance needs.

Key Features and Characteristics

  • Foliage Color Change: In spring, leaves feature a vibrant yellow center with wide blue-green margins. As the season progresses into summer, the center lightens to a creamy white or light green, while the margins can deepen in color.
  • Slug Resistance: The leaves are slightly cupped, thick, and have a strong substance, which contributes to their reported resistance to slugs, a common hosta pest.
  • Flowers: Dainty spikes of lavender tubular flowers rise above the foliage in mid-summer and can attract hummingbirds.
  • Size: This is a small to medium-sized hosta, typically reaching a mature height of 10-14 inches (25-36 cm) and a spread of 18-24 inches (46-61 cm).
  • Growth Habit: It forms a dense, low, and mounded clump, making it suitable for container planting, borders, or as a specimen plant in a shade garden.
  • Hardiness Zone: It is hardy in USDA zones 3 through 9.

    Growing Conditions and Care
  • Light: It thrives in partial shade to full shade. Morning sun is tolerable and can help intensify the leaf colors, but hot afternoon sun should be avoided as it can burn the leaves.
  • Soil: It prefers average, rich, and well-drained soil with even moisture. It does best in moist, humus-rich soil.
  • Watering: Provide regular watering until the plant is well established. Once established, it requires even moisture and shouldn't be allowed to dry out completely.
  • Maintenance: It is a relatively low-maintenance perennial. It is best cleaned up in early spring by removing the previous season's dead foliage. Mulching annually in spring helps retain moisture.
  • Growth Rate: It has a slow to moderate growth rate and may take 2 to 5 years to reach its full mature size.
