Megan's Angel Hosta is a giant, fast-growing perennial known for its massive blue-green leaves and striking creamy-white margins. Registered in 2009 by Doug and Mardy Beilstein, this cultivar is a "sport" of the well-known 'Blue Angel' hosta and was named after their daughter.

Physical Characteristics

  • Foliage: The leaves emerge in spring with a soft blue center and a muted chartreuse or soft yellow border. By mid-summer, the centers turn dark green-blue and the margins fade to a luminous creamy white that widens as the plant ages.
  • Flowers: In early to mid-summer, it produces clusters of near-white or pale lavender bell-shaped flowers on tall, woody scapes that can reach up to 36 inches.
  • Size: A mature plant typically reaches approximately 22 inches in height and can spread between 50 to 60 inches wide. Some sources suggest it can grow as large as 30 inches tall and 70 inches wide under ideal conditions.

Growing and Care Instructions

  • Sunlight: According to Wildwood Outdoor Living, it thrives in part to full shade and is highly suitable for shaded garden spaces.
  • Soil: It prefers moist, fertile, and well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter.
  • Hardiness: It is adapted to USDA Hardiness Zones 3 through 9.
  • Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Deep, infrequent watering is generally better than shallow, frequent applications.
  • Pests: While it is considered slug-resistant due to its heavy, thick foliage, it may still be susceptible to damage from deer or rabbits.
  • Planting: The best time to plant or divide these hostas is in early spring before leaves unfurl or in early fall.
