Midnight Oil Hosta

Midnight Oil is a striking medium-sized hosta variety highly regarded for its exceptionally dark green, nearly black, glossy foliage. Created by hybridizers Bev and Dave Stegeman, it is a cross between 'Potomac Pride' and 'Neat Splash Rim'.

Key Characteristics

• Foliage: Features thick-substanced, intensely shiny leaves that are deeply corrugated, puckered, and folded.
  
• Form: Grows in an elegant, upright, vase-shaped silhouette.
  
• Size: Typically matures to about 15–16 inches high and 26–40 inches wide.
  
• Flowers: Produces pale purple or lavender striped flowers in July. 

Care and Growing Requirements

• Light: Performs best in partial to full shade. While some sources suggest it can handle more sun than average while maintaining its dark color, protection from harsh afternoon sun is recommended to prevent leaf burn.
  
• Soil: Thrives in moist, well-draining soil rich in organic matter.
  
• Hardiness: Suitable for USDA Zones 3–9. It requires a dormant period with temperatures below 40°F for at least 40 days to thrive.
  
• Maintenance: Water regularly to keep soil constantly moist but avoid puddling. It is generally considered a moderate to fast grower once established.
