The Orion's Belt Hosta (Hosta 'Orion's Belt') is a striking, medium-to-large perennial known for its heart-shaped leaves that have blue-green centers and wide, contrasting creamy-white margins. This low-maintenance plant thrives in shaded garden areas and is known for its good slug resistance.

Key Characteristics

  • Foliage: The heart-shaped leaves emerge blue-green in spring with creamy yellow margins, which fade to a sharp, bright white as the season progresses. The leaves are moderately corrugated and may develop a slight wave or cupped shape at maturity.
  • Flowers: Dainty spikes of pale lavender tubular flowers appear in early to midsummer, rising above the foliage.
  • Size: The plant typically grows to about 18-20 inches in height and can spread up to 3 feet (36-42 inches) wide at maturity.
  • Hardiness Zone: It is hardy in USDA zones 3 through 9.
  • Landscape Use: It is ideal for mass plantings, border edging, groundcover in shaded areas, and container gardening.

Planting and Care

  • Light Requirements: This hosta does best in partial to full shade and should be sheltered from the hot afternoon sun to prevent leaf scorch. Morning sun is generally well-tolerated.
  • Soil: It prefers moist, fertile, and well-drained soil. It can tolerate a range of soil types including clay, loam, and sand, provided they are well-drained. Adding organic matter like compost can improve soil health.
  • Watering: The plant requires average water needs and the soil should be kept consistently moist but not waterlogged.
  • Maintenance: It is a low-maintenance plant. Faded flower stems should be removed to tidy up the appearance. In the fall, cutting back the dying foliage after the first hard frost can help deter overwintering slugs and pests.
