Hosta 'Oyster Bar' is a medium-sized, upright, and slow-growing cultivar (approx. 18" tall x 40" wide) featuring long, heavily veined, blue-green leaves with thick white wax. A sport of 'Tidewater', it produces creamy-yellow margins in spring that transition to white by summer. It prefers shade to partial shade, consistent moisture, and produces lavender flowers in summer.
Physical Characteristics
- Foliage: It features long, deeply veined leaves with approximately 13 vein pairs. In spring, the leaves are blue-green with a thick creamy-yellow margin. By early summer, the margin transitions to white, and the leaf centers become more green.
- Flowers: Produces pale lavender flowers in the late season.
- Size: Grows into an upright mound reaching approximately 18–20 inches tall and 40 inches wide.
Growing Conditions
- Light: Prefers partial to full shade. Like many blue hostas, it maintains its best color and wax coating when protected from direct afternoon sun.
- Hardiness: Suitable for USDA Zones 3 through 9.
- Soil: Thrives in moist, humus-rich soil.
- Maintenance: Noted for its heavy foliage that holds up well throughout the summer and shows resistance to slugs.
