The Painted Ghost Fern (Athyrium 'Ghost') is a popular perennial hybrid valued for its luminous, silvery foliage that brightens shaded gardens. It is a cross between the Japanese Painted Fern and the Lady Fern, combining the striking color of the former with the larger, upright growth habit of the latter.
Key Characteristics:
- Appearance: Features broad, upright fronds with a distinct frosted, silvery-gray to silver-green color. These are often contrasted by deep purple or dark maroon stems (midribs).
- Size: Typically grows 2–3 feet tall and 1.5–3 feet wide at maturity.
- Hardiness: Highly adaptable, it is hardy in USDA Zones 3–8.
- Resistance: Naturally deer and rabbit resistant, making it an excellent choice for woodland areas with high wildlife activity.
Growing Conditions:
- Light: Prefers partial to full shade. While it thrives in deep shade, some morning sun or filtered light helps maximize its silver-white "glowing" effect.
- Soil: Best in moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter (humus-rich). It prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH levels.
- Water: Needs consistent moisture but is notably more drought-tolerant than many other fern varieties once established.
