‘Paprika’ is a vibrant, clump-forming perennial known for having some of the brightest orange foliage available. This Heuchera villosa hybrid is highly prized for its large, ruffled leaves that shift from glowing cherry-coral in spring to warm orange and amber in summer, deepening to a rich burgundy in autumn.
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: Features large, lobed leaves with a light silver veil. Tiny, creamy-white bell-shaped flowers bloom on slender burgundy stems in late spring or early summer.
- Size: Grows in a dense mound about 8–12 inches tall and 16–18 inches wide, with flower stalks reaching up to 24 inches.
- Hardiness: Thrives in USDA Zones 4–9.
- Pollinators: Highly attractive to hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees.
- Resistance: Naturally deer and rabbit resistant.
Care & Planting
- Sunlight: Performs best in partial shade (morning sun and afternoon shade). It is more heat and humidity tolerant than older varieties but may scorch in intense afternoon sun.
- Soil: Requires rich, well-drained soil. Avoid heavy clay or overly wet areas to prevent root rot.
- Watering: Keep soil consistently moist while establishing; once mature, it has moderate drought tolerance.
- Maintenance: Remove old, tattered foliage in early spring to make way for new growth. Apply mulch in winter to prevent "root heaving" in colder climates.
