Peppermint Twist Hosta

The Hosta 'Peppermint Twist' is a distinctive perennial valued for its glossy green, "plastic-like" leaves that feature ruffled edges and a twisted shape reminiscent of peppermint candy. Bred by Dan Wols, this variety is a hybrid of 'Cranberry Wine' and 'Ringtail', inheriting both the intense red petioles (leaf stems) and the dramatic rippled margins of its parents.

Plant Characteristics

• Mature Size: Matures to approximately 15–24 inches tall and 35–54 inches wide, forming a dramatic, vase-shaped clump.
• Foliage: Features thick, glossy green leaves with heavy substance and ruffled, twisted margins.
• Flowers: Blooms in late summer with lavender flowers held against large, pink-blushed bracts.
• Hardiness: Suitable for USDA Zones 3–9. 

Growth and Care Tips

• Light: Prefers dappled to light shade. While hostas are shade-tolerant, some filtered morning sun can help highlight the glossy texture of the leaves.
• Soil: Thrives in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. It is sensitive to wet feet in winter but requires consistent moisture during the growing season.
• Maintenance: Remove flower scapes after they finish blooming to redirect energy into leaf development. Clean up dead foliage after the first hard freeze to prevent pests like slugs from overwintering.
