Praying Hands Hosta

Hosta 'Praying Hands' is a highly unique and sought-after cultivar known for its distinctive, upright, and tightly folded leaves that resemble hands in prayer. It was the recipient of the prestigious American Hosta Growers Association's "Hosta of the Year" award in 2011. 

Key Characteristics

• Foliage: The leaves are narrow, dark green, and heavily rippled with very narrow, gold or creamy yellow margins. The tops have a matte finish, while the undersides are shiny and often visible due to the folded form.
• Form: It has a unique architectural, dense, and upright clump-forming habit, growing 14 to 18 inches tall with a spread of 12 to 18 inches.
• Flowers: Abundant spikes of light lavender, tubular flowers rise on 18-inch scapes in late summer, which attract hummingbirds and butterflies.
• Awards: This specific hosta is a collector's item and major award winner, designated the 2011 Hosta of the Year by the AHGA. 
  

Growing Conditions and Care

• Light: 'Praying Hands' does best in partial shade to full shade, and should be protected from hot afternoon sun. Some sources suggest it needs a bit more sun than other hostas to perform its best.
• Soil: It thrives in average to moist, well-drained soil with a high organic content. It tolerates urban pollution well.
• Maintenance: It is a relatively low-maintenance perennial. You should clean up dormant foliage in early winter to deter pests. Mulching can help prevent winter frost heaving, especially for young plants.
• Pests: Deer and rabbits may browse hostas, but companion plants with strong scents (like lavender or alliums) can help deter them. Slugs can also be an issue; applying slug bait in early spring can reduce infestations.
