The Hosta 'Seven Year Itch' is a medium-sized hosta known for its bright yellow, heart-shaped leaves with a heavily rippled margin. It emerges bright yellow in the spring and transitions to a chartreuse or lime green color in the summer. This hosta is a cross between 'Marilyn Monroe' and 'Dancing Queen', inheriting ruffled leaf edges and vibrant yellow spring color from its parents. It also produces lavender flowers in mid to late summer.

  • Leaves: It showcases bright golden yellow leaves with heavily rippled margins. The color transitions to a vibrant chartreuse green by mid to late summer. These broadly ovate leaves are moderately corrugated, creating an unruly effect in the clump.
  • Size: This is a medium-sized hosta, reaching a mature height of 20 inches and a width of 48 inches.
  • Origin: This cultivar was developed by Dan Wols and is a cross between the 'Marilyn Monroe' and 'Dancing Queen' hosta varieties. It inherits the ruffled leaf edges and late-season durability of 'Marilyn Monroe' along with the vigorous growth and vibrant yellow spring color of 'Dancing Queen'.
  • Flowers: In mid to late summer, it produces fertile lavender flowers. The flowers are not fragrant.
  • Growth: It's considered a medium-growth-rate hosta. It thrives in partial to full shade and is suitable for USDA hardiness zones 3-9.
  • Soil Requirements: Like most hostas, it prefers moist, well-drained, and fertile soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.5 to 7.0). Amending the soil with compost or organic matter is recommended if it's poor.
  • Watering: Consistent moisture is vital, especially during establishment. Aim for about 1 inch of water per week, adjusting based on weather conditions and if planted under trees. Deep, infrequent watering is preferable to frequent shallow watering.
  • Sun Tolerance: While it's known as a shade-loving plant, it can tolerate some sun, especially morning sun. However, avoid harsh afternoon sun to prevent leaf scorch and maintain optimal leaf color. Mulching can help keep the soil cool and moist in sunnier locations.
