The 'Skywriter' Hosta is a medium-sized, award-winning perennial known for its striking, ruffled blue leaves on bright purple stems and a silvery-white underside. It was named the American Hosta Growers Association's 2025 Hosta of the Year.
Key Features and Characteristics
- Foliage: Features intensely blue, heart-shaped leaves with heavily wavy (piecrust) edges that appear to "wiggle". A key characteristic is the visible white underside of the leaves and the vibrant purple petioles (stems).
- Size: Forms a semi-upright, medium-sized mound, typically growing 14-16 inches tall and spreading up to 30-36 inches wide.
- Flowers: Produces delicate, bell-shaped, lavender flowers on tall purple scapes (stalks) in mid to late summer.
- Growth Habit: A strong, vigorous grower known for its excellent leaf substance and slug resistance.
- Hardiness Zone: Hardy in USDA Zones 3 through 9.
Planting and Care
- Light Requirements: Thrives in partial shade to full shade, preferring bright morning sun with filtered afternoon shade to best maintain its distinctive blue color.
- Soil Requirements: Adaptable to a wide range of soils but performs best in soil that is well-drained, slightly acidic, and rich in organic matter.
- Watering: Has average water needs and should be kept consistently moist, especially during dry spells.
- Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in the spring.
Pruning: Remove spent flower stems to tidy the plants for the rest of the growing season. In the fall, cut back the foliage after it dies back naturally. - Winter Care: Mulch the plant for its first winter and remove the mulch promptly in early spring.
