T Rex Hosta

The 'T Rex' Hosta is a giant, shade-loving perennial known for its enormous, heart-shaped green leaves and impressive mature size. It is a popular, low-maintenance plant used for adding bold texture to gardens. 

Key Characteristics

• Size: This hosta grows to form a massive clump of foliage, reaching a mature height of about 30–36 inches and spreading 5–6 feet wide or more over time. Individual leaves can measure up to 18 inches long and 14 inches wide.
• Foliage: The large, heart-shaped leaves are a medium to blue-green color, with a matte finish and a slightly corrugated, wavy texture.
• Flowers: Tall stalks (scapes) of near-white, bell-shaped flowers rise above the foliage in early to mid-summer, which are known to attract hummingbirds and pollinators.
• Growth Rate: It is a relatively slow-growing plant and may take several years to reach its full, "gigantic" potential, but the result is a long-lived, impressive specimen.
• Hardiness Zones: It is hardy in USDA zones 3 through 9. 
  

Planting & Care

• Light: The 'T Rex' Hosta thrives in partial to full shade, and harsh, direct afternoon sun exposures should be avoided as it can scorch the leaves.
• Soil: It prefers average to rich, consistently moist, well-drained soil that is slightly acidic to neutral (pH 5.5 to 7.5). Amending the soil with organic matter like compost is beneficial.
• Watering: Water deeply and regularly during its first growing season to develop a strong root system. Once established, reduce frequency, but do not let the soil completely dry out.
• Maintenance: Remove old, faded foliage in early spring before new leaves emerge to keep the area clean and reduce pest habitats. Be mindful of slugs and snails, which are common pests for hostas.
