The Hosta 'Tears in Heaven' is a distinctive perennial known for its upright, cascading mound of intensely blue, ruffled leaves. It thrives in shady conditions and produces pale lavender flowers in the summer.
Key Characteristics & Growing Tips
- Foliage: The plant features ruffled, wedge-shaped leaves with an intense blue color that holds well late into the season. The cascading, fountain-like mound habit is a unique feature.
- Flowers: Pale lavender flowers with a darker lavender pattern in the center of the petals emerge on tall scapes (stalks) in mid-summer. These flowers attract hummingbirds.
- Size: A mature plant will grow to be about 15 inches tall with a spread of around 28 inches.
- Hardiness Zones: It is hardy in USDA zones 3 to 9.
Light: Prefers partial to full shade; dappled sunlight is optimal for maintaining the vibrant blue color. - Soil & Water: It grows best in moderately fertile, moist, but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. It is tolerant of dry shade once established and can also grow well in urban environments.
- Pests: Slugs and snails can be an issue, so applying slug bait in early spring and removing old foliage in late fall is recommended to reduce pest populations
