Windy City Hosta is a giant, non-registered cultivar known for its massive green leaves and striking creamy white margins. Originating from Illinois, it is a tissue culture sport of Hosta 'How About That!' and is closely related to the famous Hosta 'Sum and Substance'.
Plant Profile and Features
- Size: Classified as a giant hosta, it can reach approximately 30 inches in height and 60 inches in width at maturity.
- Foliage: Features very large, nearly round green leaves with wide, creamy-white margins. Sienna Hosta describes it as a "monster of a plant" with thick leaves.
- Flowers: Produces pale lavender, tubular flowers that typically bloom from July into August.
- Origin: Developed by Mark Zilis of T&Z or Q&Z Nursery and the Northern Illinois Hosta Society.
Growth and Care Requirements
- Sunlight: Best grown in part shade to full shade. Morning sun may be tolerated, but hot afternoon sun can scorch the leaves.
- Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter.
- Water: Requires regular watering to keep the soil consistently moist, especially during its active growing season.
- Hardiness: Generally hardy in USDA Zones 3 to 8.
- Pest Resistance: While hostas are generally susceptible to slugs, thicker-leaved varieties like 'Windy City' often show better resistance.
