The Hosta 'Yankee Blue' is a vigorous, large-sized perennial prized for its thick, elongated, wedge-shaped blue leaves and symmetrical growth habit. Registered by Bob Balitewicz in 1999, it is a hybrid of 'Blue Arrow' and 'Elatior' known for holding its blue color well into the summer before transitioning to a blue-green shade.

Key Characteristics

  • Size: Typically grows to a height of 20–21 inches and a spread of about 50–56 inches at maturity.
  • Foliage: Features narrowly ovate or wedge-shaped leaves with wavy margins and a thick waxy "bloom" on the underside that gives it its blue color.
  • Flowers: Produces near-white to pale lavender flowers on tall stalks (scapes) in mid-to-late summer (July to August).
  • Hardiness: Suitable for USDA Zones 3 through 9, making it extremely cold-hardy.

Planting and Care Requirements

  • Light: Performs best in partial to full shade. To maintain the blue color longest, it should be protected from intense afternoon sun, which can "melt" the waxy coating and turn the leaves green.
  • Soil: Prefers rich, moist, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH.
  • Watering: Requires consistent moisture, especially during its first growing season. Avoid overhead watering to prevent damaging the delicate blue waxy coating on the leaves.
  • Maintenance: Remove spent flower stalks after blooming and clear dead foliage in late fall after the first frost to discourage slugs and other pests.
